MANAGING TCS COMPLIANCE — A BEGINNER'S ROADMAP
Managing taxes doesn't have to be a headache — even for beginners! Many business owners, first-time exporters, and growing MSMEs in India struggle with TCS return filing requirements. Making a simple error can lead to stressful notices, unplanned penalties, or loss of credibility with buyers and authorities.
This guide is your roadmap to mastering Form 143 without jargon or confusion. We're here to answer the questions others forget and share practical tips to help you keep more of your hard-earned money while staying compliant.
WHAT IS TCS (TAX COLLECTED AT SOURCE)?
Tax Collected at Source (TCS) is an indirect tax collected by sellers from buyers at the point of sale, then deposited with the government. It exists to improve tax transparency and plug revenue leakages.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES
BUYING A LUXURY CAR
Rahul buys a car worth ₹12 Lakhs. The dealer collects 1% TCS (₹12,000) and deposits it with the government. Rahul can claim this while filing his ITR.
FOREIGN REMITTANCE FOR STUDIES
Meena's father sends ₹20 lakh overseas for her UK education. The bank deducts TCS before initiating the transfer, ensuring proper tax compliance.
TCS ON SALE OF GOODS
A supplier selling iron scrap with over ₹10 Cr annual turnover must collect TCS on receipts over ₹50 Lakhs from any single buyer.
TIMBER MERCHANTS
A timber trader selling logs collects TCS from carpenters purchasing in bulk — keeping the entire supply chain tax compliant.
TCS operates across several areas such as alcohol, tolls, mining, tendu leaves, and even parking lots. India's evolving tax ecosystem ensures that revenue from big-ticket sectors remains transparent and traceable. If you're not sure whether your business activity falls under TCS, consult your CA or refer to the latest government notification.
WHO NEEDS TO FILE FORM 143?
You are required to file a quarterly TCS return (Form 143) if:
- 🏢 You're a business owner selling specific notified goods like scrap, minerals, or forest produce.
- 💎 You deal in high-value sales — such as luxury cars, jewellery, or expensive electronic goods.
- 🏦 You are an authorized dealer, forex agent, or bank processing foreign remittances for clients.
- 📦 You are an exporter or agent who manages large consignment turnover.
- 📊 Your annual sales/receipts exceed the government's TCS applicability threshold in the current or previous year.
If you run a dealership selling cars and collected TCS in any quarter, skipping Form 143 is not an option. Even if you haven't made any TCS-applicable sale in one quarter, it's recommended to file a nil return to stay compliant with the authorities.
Don't just look at your business alone. If you operate multiple branches or franchises, aggregate your data before filing to avoid compliance issues.

HOW TO FILE YOUR TCS RETURN
Filing your return can be hassle-free if you follow this structured TCS return filing guide:
PREPARATION
Download and fill Form 143. Use a separate worksheet to compile buyer details if you have many transactions. Download and update the RPU to the latest version — old RPU will not accept the new Form 143 structure.
DATA COLLATION
Collect digital and hard copies of invoices, TCS challans, and supporting docs. Verify all buyer PAN numbers against the PAN database to avoid mismatch errors.
DEPOSIT VERIFICATION
Double-check your deposited TCS using your bank statement and challan number to avoid mismatches. Confirm BSR codes and challan serial numbers on TIN 2.0 / TRACES portal.
UTILITY TOOL
Open the government's TCS filing process tool (RPU). Import your prepared data, verify for errors, and digitally sign if required. Run FVU validation — fix all errors before proceeding.
UPLOAD & SUBMIT
Submit on the Income Tax e-filing portal. Go to: e-File → Income Tax Forms → File Income Tax Forms → Forms under Income Tax Act, 2025 → Form 143. Save the acknowledgment receipt.
ISSUE FORM 133 TO COLLECTEES
TCS certificate (Form 133, replacing old Form 27D) must be issued to each buyer within 15 days of the due date of filing for that quarter.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE: Mr. Kumar, a Mumbai jeweller, files Form 143 after collating monthly sales of over ₹1 crore. He avoids penalties by setting automation reminders and collaborating with his CA for accuracy. Need more help? Check out our video guide or interactive FAQ section for step-by-step support.
DUE DATES AND PENALTIES
Pay attention to the TCS return due date — even a day's delay can cost you. Under the Income Tax Act, 2025 (Tax Year 2026-27), the revised due date schedule is:
PENALTIES FOR LATE OR INCORRECT FILING
Capped at total TCS amount (Section 427)
Charged until full payment is made
Possible for continuous, wilful default
DO THIS NOW: Set reminders for each deadline, and always review final submissions for accuracy. Correction statements may be filed within 2 years from the end of the tax year in which the statement was due.
LATEST UPDATES (2026)
The Income Tax Department is making life easier — and compliance stricter — with new updates effective April 1, 2026:
Form 143 is now mandatory for all TCS returns from Tax Year 2026-27 under the Income Tax Act, 2025. Form 27EQ is retired for new transactions.
More fields for tracking buyer details, harmonized with GST databases for cross-verification of large transactions.
E-verification steps built into the digital utility to reduce rejection rates — the RPU now validates section codes, PAN formats, and challan data automatically.
Downloadable sample forms and validation tools available on the e-filing portal for all users (Form Navigator available under "Notification No. 22/2026").
Dual system support: The TRACES portal simultaneously supports old formats (for periods up to March 2026) and new formats (from April 2026 onwards) during the transition period.
New Section 394 references replace the old scattered TCS sections (206C etc.). Using old section numbers for April 2026+ transactions will cause validation errors on the portal.

If you enter an incorrect PAN, the buyer cannot claim TCS credit. File a correction return immediately to ensure the credit is available and avoid buyer disputes. You have up to 2 years from the end of the tax year to file correction statements.
If no TCS was collected, filing a nil return is generally not mandatory but is a good practice to demonstrate compliance and avoid system-generated notices from the Income Tax Department.
You can prepare data offline using the government RPU utility, but final uploading and submission must be done online on the income tax e-filing portal. Offline preparation is perfectly fine — just don't skip the online submission step.
Yes, submit a correction statement online. Keeping scanned copies of your challans handy helps avoid repeat errors. The correction window is 2 years from the end of the tax year in which the original statement was due.
No. Transactions from April 1, 2026 onwards must be reported in Form 143 under the Income Tax Act, 2025. Form 27EQ is only valid for quarters ending on or before March 31, 2026 — including correction returns for those earlier periods.
