Quick Answers

What is ITR e-verification?

E verification of ITR is the process of authenticating an Income Tax Return after it has been filed. It confirms that the return was submitted or approved by the taxpayer or an authorised person.

What is the time limit?

The applicable time limit is currently 30 days from the date of filing the return. This rule should be checked again before every annual content update.

What is Easy Return’s recommended method?

For taxpayers who want a guided process, the Easy Return App provides a simple route: log in, select E-Verify ITR, provide the required details and complete verification through the available process.

Can you verify after 30 days?

A condonation-of-delay request may be available if the verification deadline has passed. Acceptance is subject to the Income Tax Department’s decision.

Important E-Verification Terms

ITR E-Verification
The process of authenticating a filed Income Tax Return electronically or through signed ITR-V.
EVC
An Electronic Verification Code used to authenticate an eligible Income Tax Return or another supported submission.
ITR-V
The Income Tax Return Verification acknowledgement used when a return requires verification.
DSC
A Digital Signature Certificate used for electronic authentication in applicable cases.
Condonation Request
A request asking the Income Tax Department to accept delayed verification when the taxpayer has a genuine reason for missing the deadline.

What Is E-Verification of an Income Tax Return?

Filing and verifying an Income Tax Return are two separate steps.

Filing transmits your income, deduction and tax information to the Income Tax Department. Verification authenticates the submitted return and confirms that it belongs to you.

The e verification of income tax return can be completed using different methods, depending on the taxpayer’s available accounts, registered contact details and eligibility.

Common electronic options include:

  • Aadhaar OTP
  • Net banking
  • Pre-validated bank account EVC
  • Pre-validated demat account EVC
  • Bank ATM EVC
  • Digital Signature Certificate

A taxpayer may also complete physical verification by sending a duly signed ITR-V to the Centralised Processing Centre according to the applicable instructions.

You only need to use one valid verification method for a particular return.

Why Is ITR E-Verification Required?

Completing income tax return verification is important because it:

  • Authenticates the filed return
  • Confirms the taxpayer’s approval of the submission
  • Completes the return-filing process
  • Enables the return to proceed for processing
  • Supports processing of an eligible refund claim
  • Establishes a completed tax-filing record
  • Helps prevent an unverified return from being treated as invalid

An unverified return may remain incomplete even when all the income and tax figures in it are correct.

The Easy Return App is Easy Return’s recommended method for taxpayers who want a short, guided verification journey without navigating through multiple unfamiliar sections on their own.

Time Limit to E-Verify ITR

The Income Tax Department currently provides 30 days from the filing date for e-verification or submission of ITR-V.

If verification is completed within the permitted period, the date on which the return was originally uploaded is generally treated as the date of filing.

If the return is verified after the 30-day period, the date of verification may be treated as the filing date, and applicable consequences of late filing can follow. An unverified return may be treated as invalid, although a condonation request can be submitted for a genuine delay. Income Tax Department: 30-day verification rules.

Example

Suppose you file your return on 15 July.

The 30-day verification period begins from the filing date. Complete verification within the applicable period to preserve the original filing date, subject to the current official rule.

Do not wait until the last day. Aadhaar, bank-account, OTP or portal issues may take time to resolve.

After you successfully e verify income tax return, the portal generally displays a confirmation with a Transaction ID and acknowledgement information. A confirmation may also be sent through the contact details registered on the portal.

The return can then proceed for processing.

Processing may involve:

  • Matching reported income and tax information
  • Considering TDS and other tax-credit records
  • Checking the tax calculation
  • Determining an applicable refund or demand
  • Issuing an intimation
  • Requesting additional information where necessary

If processing has been completed and you are tracking a refund, use our income tax refund status guide.

What Happens If You Do Not E-Verify Your ITR?

If you fail to complete ITR verification within the applicable period, the return may be treated as invalid.

Possible consequences include:

  • Return processing does not proceed
  • An eligible refund remains unprocessed
  • The original return may not be recognised as validly filed
  • The later verification date may be treated as the filing date
  • Applicable late-filing consequences may arise
  • A condonation request may be required

Late-filing fees and verification consequences should not be treated as identical. The actual effect depends on the filing date, statutory due date, income, return type and whether delayed verification is accepted.

Select the applicable reason for the delay.

04
