Salary Calculator
What to Do After Using Your Salary Calculator
Once you know your estimated monthly take-home salary, you can explore how taxation, employment benefits and regular savings affect your finances. These tools can help you plan beyond your monthly payslip.
A salary calculator helps estimate your annual earnings, income tax and take-home salary after relevant payroll deductions. It can help you understand the difference between your offered salary package and the money available for spending or saving.
The Easy Return Salary Calculator uses annual cash salary, performance bonus and selected monthly deduction inputs to prepare an estimated salary breakdown.
This guide explains salary components, calculation formulas, new-regime income tax, practical examples and important limitations of take-home salary estimates.
What Period Do the Tax Examples Cover?
The examples below use the new-regime slabs applicable to FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026 for the subsequent tax year.
The live calculator's supported tax year must be checked separately. Page content does not automatically update its calculation engine.
What Is a Salary Calculator?
A salary calculator is a financial tool that estimates the amount remaining from your earnings after accounting for relevant deductions and income tax.
Gross Salary
Your earnings before applicable deductions, including fixed pay and taxable bonus.
Payroll Deductions
Employee PF, professional tax and other deductions that reduce the amount paid to you.
Net Take-Home
The estimated salary remaining after payroll deductions and income tax.
Gross Salary Is Not the Same as CTC
Cost to Company (CTC) may include employer contributions, insurance costs, gratuity provisions and other benefits that are not paid as monthly cash salary. Do not enter the entire CTC as annual cash salary without checking its components.
Salary Calculation Formula Explained
The general calculation separates gross earnings, payroll deductions and income tax.
Calculate Gross Cash Salary
Other taxable cash earnings may also need to be included for an actual payroll computation.
Calculate Payroll Deductions
Include employee PF, professional tax and other deductions entered into the calculator. Do not enter TDS twice.
Estimate Taxable Salary
In the standard new-regime salary example, a ₹75,000 standard deduction applies. Other taxable benefits, exemptions or adjustments may affect actual total income.
Estimate Income Tax
Apply marginal relief where eligible. The calculation can differ where special-rate income or additional taxable income exists.
Annual and Monthly Take-Home
Annual Take-Home = Gross Cash Pay − Payroll Deductions − Estimated Income Tax.
Average Monthly Take-Home = Annual Take-Home ÷ 12.
Monthly salary actually received can vary when bonus payments, TDS adjustments or one-time deductions occur.

New vs Old Tax Regime for Salaried Employees
The selected income-tax regime affects the way taxable salary is calculated. The following comparison relates primarily to FY 2025–26 rules.
| Feature | New Regime | Old Regime |
|---|---|---|
| Tax slabs | Revised progressive slabs, with ₹4 lakh nil-rate band. | Traditional slab structure, with age-related basic exemption differences. |
| Standard deduction | Up to ₹75,000 for eligible salary income. | Up to ₹50,000 for eligible salary income. |
| HRA exemption | Generally not available. | Available subject to conditions. |
| Common savings deductions | Most personal deductions, including 80C, unavailable. | Eligible deductions, including 80C and 80D, can apply. |
| Default treatment | Generally the default for eligible individuals. | Requires valid regime selection where allowed. |
Which Tax Regime Is Better?
There is no universal answer. Compare tax liability using actual salary, exemptions and eligible deductions. A lower slab rate does not automatically mean the lowest final tax for everyone.
New Tax Regime Slabs for FY 2025–26
These slabs apply to ordinary taxable income under the new regime for AY 2026–27. Each rate applies to the relevant income band, not automatically to total income.
| Taxable Income Band | Tax Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | Nil |
| ₹4,00,001 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% |
| ₹8,00,001 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% |
| ₹12,00,001 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% |
| ₹16,00,001 – ₹20,00,000 | 20% |
| ₹20,00,001 – ₹24,00,000 | 25% |
| Above ₹24,00,000 | 30% |
Tax Rebate
Under Section 87A of the Income-tax Act, 1961 for AY 2026–27, eligible resident individuals with total income up to ₹12 lakh can receive a rebate up to ₹60,000 against qualifying normal-rate tax.
Marginal Relief
Eligible taxpayers with income slightly above ₹12 lakh may receive marginal relief. It limits the normal-rate tax impact of crossing the threshold.
Health and Education Cess
A 4% cess generally applies to calculated income tax and applicable surcharge after relevant rebate or relief.
Special-Rate Income
Some capital gains and other specified income are taxed under separate rules. The normal new-regime rebate does not automatically offset such tax.
FY 2026–27 and the New Income-tax Act
The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 April 2026. For income earned in Tax Year 2026–27, the new Act's applicable provisions must be used. Confirm the live calculator implements the correct rules for that tax year.
