EMI Calculator
An EMI Calculator estimates the monthly instalment on a loan using the principal, interest rate and repayment tenure. It also helps you understand the estimated total interest and overall repayment amount.
Whether you are planning a home loan, personal loan, car loan or education loan, checking your EMI before borrowing can make financial planning easier.
What Is an EMI Calculator?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the regular amount paid towards a loan according to the lender's repayment schedule.
A standard reducing-balance EMI contains two components: principal repayment and interest. During the early part of the tenure, interest generally forms a larger share. As the outstanding principal falls, the principal-repayment portion generally increases.
For a fixed interest rate and unchanged repayment schedule, the EMI normally remains constant. However, the total interest cost depends heavily on the rate and tenure you choose.
How Is EMI Calculated?
A standard monthly reducing-balance EMI calculator uses the following mathematical formula:
Monthly loan instalment
Principal amount borrowed
Monthly interest rate in decimal form
Total number of monthly instalments
How to Convert Annual Interest into Monthly Interest
If the quoted annual interest rate is 12%, the monthly rate used in this formula is 12 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.01.
The formula assumes a constant monthly interest rate. At a zero interest rate, the EMI is simply the principal divided by the number of instalments.
How to Use the EMI Calculator
You only need three basic inputs. Try different combinations to understand how your monthly payment changes.
Enter the Loan Amount
Enter the amount you intend to borrow, excluding any down payment you plan to make separately.
Select the Interest Rate
Enter the lender's quoted annual interest rate. Compare rates using the same loan amount and tenure.
Choose the Loan Tenure
Select the repayment period in years or months. A longer period generally reduces the EMI but increases total interest.
Understanding Your EMI Results
The calculated results generally include monthly EMI, total interest payable and the total repayment amount. If an amortisation schedule is available, it also shows how each payment reduces the outstanding balance.
Benefits of Using an EMI Calculator
Monthly Budget Planning
Estimate the regular monthly payment before committing to a loan.
Total Interest Visibility
See how much interest you may pay beyond the borrowed principal.
Compare Loan Tenures
Test shorter or longer repayment periods to balance affordability and interest cost.
Compare Interest Rates
Estimate the impact of different rates offered by lenders.
Plan Your Down Payment
Estimate how a smaller principal can reduce your monthly repayment.
Understand Repayment
Review how principal and interest are paid over the loan period.
Before taking a loan, consider whether the monthly EMI leaves enough money for living expenses, emergencies and regular savings. A savings calculator can help you plan savings alongside your expected loan repayments.
EMI Calculation Examples
These examples use the standard monthly reducing-balance formula. Figures are rounded and assume unchanged interest rates, regular monthly repayment and no additional lender fees.
Priya plans to borrow ₹40 lakh for 20 years at a fixed annual interest rate of 9%.
For home-loan applications, lenders may require income and tax documents. Learn about obtaining an ITR computation for home loan when preparing your documentation.
Rahul plans to borrow ₹5 lakh for five years at a fixed annual interest rate of 14%.
The shorter tenure limits the number of months over which interest accumulates, but the EMI must still fit comfortably into the borrower's budget.
Types of Loans You Can Calculate EMI For
Home Loan
Used for buying, constructing or renovating residential property, depending on the lender's product. Home loans often have relatively long tenures.
Personal Loan
Usually unsecured borrowing for eligible personal needs. Rates and repayment periods depend on the borrower's profile and lender.
Car Loan
Finance for purchasing a vehicle, generally with repayment through monthly instalments. The vehicle may serve as loan security.
Education Loan
Finance for eligible education expenses. Repayment may include a moratorium or other lender-specific conditions.
Business Loan
Used for business investment, expansion or working-capital requirements. Loan terms depend on business cash flow and lender assessment.
Equipment Loan
Used to finance machinery, equipment or other business assets. The loan may be structured around expected business cash flow.
Planning a Business Loan?
EMI affordability is only one part of business-loan evaluation. Lenders may also assess projected cash flow and debt repayment capacity.
For cash-flow analysis, a DSCR calculator can help estimate the debt service coverage ratio.
Businesses preparing a loan proposal may also need financial projections and supporting explanations. Read about preparing a project report for bank loan where required by the lender.
EMI vs Lump Sum Repayment
A standard EMI loan spreads repayment across monthly instalments. Some other loan products may require a bullet or lump-sum repayment of principal at a specified date.
| Feature | EMI Repayment | Lump Sum Repayment |
|---|---|---|
| Payment Pattern | Regular monthly instalments | Principal repaid as a larger amount, often at maturity |
| Monthly Cash Flow | Predictable periodic payment commitment | Depends on whether interest is serviced periodically or accrued |
| Principal Reduction | Generally reduces with each instalment | Principal may remain outstanding until the specified repayment date |
| Interest Cost | Generally calculated on a declining balance | Depends on the loan's interest accrual and repayment terms |
| Budget Planning | Requires regular monthly repayment capacity | Requires sufficient funds when the larger repayment becomes due |
Which Repayment Method Is Better?
Neither is automatically the cheapest or most suitable. The outcome depends on the interest rate, interest calculation method, payment schedule, fees and your ability to repay.
EMI Calculator Frequently Asked Questions
What does an EMI Calculator include and exclude?
A standard EMI calculation estimates monthly payment, total interest and total principal-plus-interest repayment. It generally excludes processing fees, stamp duty, insurance and other lender charges unless separately included.
Does a longer loan tenure reduce total interest?
Generally no. With the same principal and fixed interest rate, a longer tenure reduces monthly EMI but increases total interest.
How is the interest rate used in the EMI formula?
The annual nominal rate is converted into a monthly decimal rate. For example, 12% per annum becomes 0.01 per month under the standard formula.
Does EMI change on a floating-rate loan?
It can. Depending on the loan agreement and lender's process, a rate change may affect the EMI, remaining tenure or both. A simple fixed-rate calculator does not model future rate changes.
Can I reduce my EMI by making a larger down payment?
Generally yes. A larger down payment reduces the principal borrowed, which lowers the EMI when the rate and tenure remain unchanged.
Is the EMI Calculator result the final lender offer?
No. EMI calculations are estimates. Final repayments depend on the lender's sanctioned loan amount, rate, fees, repayment structure and loan terms.
