What Is Income Tax E-Filing?
Income Tax E-Filing is the electronic process of submitting an Income Tax Return (ITR) to the Income Tax Department. It allows taxpayers to report their income, calculate tax liability, claim eligible deductions and tax credits, and submit the applicable return online.
In simple terms: Instead of submitting a paper tax return, eligible taxpayers can file electronically using the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. The return contains relevant income details, deductions, taxes paid and other prescribed information for the applicable assessment year or tax year.
What Does the Income Tax E-Filing Process Include?
Reporting Income
Report applicable salary, business, professional, house property, capital gains, interest and other income according to the relevant ITR form.
Calculating Tax
Consider the applicable tax regime, eligible deductions, exemptions and TDS/TCS credits to determine tax payable or any potential refund.
Submitting and Verifying Your ITR
Submit the completed return through the official system, complete the applicable verification requirements and retain the acknowledgement.
Two Ways to Complete Your Income Tax E-Filing
File Your ITR Yourself
Eligible taxpayers can file their returns directly through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. The government portal provides the applicable online filing and verification facilities.
Get Help With Easy Return
Easy Return provides an alternative for taxpayers who prefer assistance with their return information, eligible ITR form selection, tax computations and applicable filing steps. Service availability and charges depend on the assistance requested.
ध्यान दें: Income Tax Return ऑनलाइन फाइल करने के बाद उसका e-verification भी जरूरी होता है। केवल ITR सबमिट करना हमेशा पूरी प्रक्रिया समाप्त होने के बराबर नहीं है।
Filing an ITR does not automatically guarantee a refund. Any refund depends on the taxpayer's final tax liability, available tax credits and return processing.
Who Needs to File an Income Tax Return?
Income Tax Return (ITR) filing requirements depend on your taxable income, residential status, income sources and other prescribed conditions.
Whether you are salaried, self-employed or earning from multiple sources, it is important to understand whether filing is mandatory for you.
When Is ITR Filing Mandatory?
Individuals are generally required to file an ITR when their income, computed in the manner prescribed for the applicable year, exceeds the relevant basic exemption limit. Filing may also be compulsory under specified additional conditions even when income is below that limit. A tax rebate or zero final tax payable does not automatically remove a filing obligation.
Who May Need Income Tax E-Filing Services?
Salaried Employees
Employees receiving salary, bonuses, allowances or income from multiple employers may need to file an ITR based on their income and circumstances.

Freelancers & Professionals
Freelancers, consultants and self-employed professionals may need to report their professional receipts, expenses and other taxable income.
Gig & Delivery Workers
Food delivery partners, bike taxi riders and other gig workers may need to file returns depending on their earnings, business activity and other prescribed conditions.
Investors & Property Owners
Individuals earning capital gains from shares, mutual funds or property, along with rental income, may need to file the appropriate return.
Pensioners & Other Income Earners
Pensioners and individuals earning bank interest, rental income or other taxable receipts may have filing requirements based on their overall income and circumstances.
Other Situations Where ITR Filing May Be Required
Apart from the general income threshold, income-tax law prescribes additional conditions for mandatory return filing. These may include:
Specified high-value bank deposits, business turnover or professional receipts.
Prescribed levels of TDS/TCS or certain expenses and financial transactions.
Certain foreign assets, financial interests or overseas account signing authority, subject to applicable residential-status rules.
Other specific statutory filing obligations applicable to the taxpayer and the relevant year.
Can You File an ITR Even If It Is Not Mandatory?
Yes. Eligible taxpayers may voluntarily file an Income Tax Return even when mandatory filing conditions do not apply.
For example, filing may help claim a legitimate refund of excess tax deducted, maintain income records or provide financial documentation where requested by a bank or another institution. Applicable filing rules and deadlines still apply.
Tax-year clarification: For FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27, the Income-tax Act, 1961 continues to govern the applicable return filing. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, with return filing provisions for Tax Year 2026–27 under Section 263. Always check the rules applicable to your filing year.

Old vs New Tax Regime for ITR Filing
When filing your Income Tax Return, choosing the appropriate tax regime can affect your deductions, applicable tax rates and final income-tax liability.
For FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27, the new tax regime under Section 115BAC of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (Now Section 202 under the Income-tax Act, 2025) is the default for eligible taxpayers. However, the option to choose the old regime remains available subject to conditions.
Old Tax Regime
The old tax regime has its own income-tax slabs and allows a broader range of eligible exemptions and deductions.
- ✓ Eligible Section 80C deductions, subject to applicable limits
- ✓ Eligible Section 80D medical insurance deductions
- ✓ HRA exemption, where applicable
- ✓ Permitted home-loan interest benefits
- ✓ ₹50,000 standard deduction for eligible salary or pension
New Tax Regime
The new regime offers different income-tax slabs, with fewer permitted exemptions and deductions compared with the old regime.
- ✓ Basic slab exemption up to ₹4 lakh for AY 2026–27
- ✓ ₹75,000 standard deduction for eligible salary or pension
- ✓ Specified employer NPS contribution deduction, subject to conditions
- ✓ Section 87A rebate up to ₹60,000 for qualifying resident individuals
- ✓ Limited exemptions and deductions, as prescribed
Old vs New Tax Regime: Quick Comparison
| Feature | Old Regime | New Regime |
|---|---|---|
| Default selection | No | Yes |
| Tax slabs | Old regime slab rates | Revised slabs for AY 2026–27 |
| Standard deduction | ₹50,000 for eligible salary/pension | ₹75,000 for eligible salary/pension |
| Section 80C | Available if eligible | Generally not available |
| HRA exemption | Available if eligible | Not available |
| Section 80D | Available if eligible | Generally not available |
| Regime selection | Requires valid opt-out from default | Applies by default |
How Do You Choose the Appropriate Tax Regime?
Salaried Individuals Without Business Income
Eligible non-business taxpayers can generally make their regime choice in the return for the relevant year, subject to due-date requirements. Compare the actual tax payable after permitted deductions before selecting the old or new regime.
Business Owners & Professionals
Taxpayers having business or professional income face additional regime selection and switching rules. For AY 2026–27, opting for the old regime may require Form 10-IEA within the applicable deadline. Switching between regimes is subject to restrictions.
Important rebate clarification: Under the new regime for AY 2026–27, qualifying resident individuals with total income up to ₹12 lakh may be eligible for the Section 87A rebate, subject to the statutory rules. The rebate does not apply to tax on certain special-rate income, such as specified capital gains. Surcharge, cess and other applicable conditions must also be considered.
Compare before filing: Use the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and its available income-tax estimation facilities to compare the old and new regimes based on your actual income and deductions.
ध्यान दें: New Tax Regime हर taxpayer के लिए सबसे सस्ता विकल्प नहीं होता। आपकी income, deductions और applicable tax rules के आधार पर दोनों regimes में tax calculate करके सही विकल्प चुनें।
Tax-year clarification: FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27 is governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, with the new regime provided under Section 202. Taxpayers should check the applicable tax-year rules before filing.
Understanding TDS, TCS and Income Tax Refunds
When filing your Income Tax Return, you should account for tax already deducted, collected or paid during the relevant financial year. This helps determine whether additional tax is payable or an income tax refund may arise.
TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) are important tax-credit components. They should be reconciled with official records before you submit your ITR.
What Is TDS?
Tax Deducted at Source is tax withheld by an applicable payer or deductor on specified payments such as salary, interest, professional fees or other taxable transactions. Eligible TDS credits can be claimed in the ITR subject to the relevant rules.
What Is TCS?
Tax Collected at Source is tax collected on specified transactions under applicable income-tax provisions. Eligible TCS amounts reported against your PAN may be claimed as tax credit while filing the return.
When Does an Income Tax Refund Arise?
A refund may arise when eligible TDS, TCS, advance tax and other applicable tax payments exceed the final income-tax liability for the relevant year, subject to verification, processing and adjustments.
How to Check TDS/TCS Credits Before ITR Filing
Before claiming tax credits, compare the information shown in Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS) with your own income and tax records. The figures should be reviewed carefully rather than accepted automatically.
Review Form 26AS
Check available tax-credit entries and payment details reported against your PAN for the relevant year.
Check AIS Information
Review reported financial information, including relevant income and tax-related transactions.
Compare Supporting Records
Match reported entries with salary TDS certificates, bank statements, professional payment records and other supporting information.
Claim Eligible Tax Credits
Report the appropriate tax-credit details in your ITR according to the applicable rules. Resolve identified discrepancies where necessary.
Example: How an Income Tax Refund Is Calculated
Consider a simplified hypothetical example where the taxpayer has eligible tax payments exceeding the calculated tax liability.
Calculation: ₹35,000 − ₹25,000 = ₹10,000. This is an illustrative amount, not an approved or guaranteed refund. Actual refunds depend on verified credits, final tax liability, return processing and any applicable adjustments.
Common TDS/TCS Credit Problems During ITR Filing
TDS Not Showing in Form 26AS
The deductor may not have filed the statement, may have reported an incorrect PAN or may need to submit a correction. Check the relevant certificate and contact the deductor where necessary.
Incorrect Tax Credit Amount
The amount claimed in the return may differ from the reported tax-credit information. Reconcile the records before submission.
AIS Information Does Not Match
AIS may contain information that needs review or correction. Check your supporting records and submit appropriate AIS feedback where applicable.
Tax Paid but Not Properly Reflected
Advance tax or self-assessment tax entries may require verification of payment details, assessment year, challan information or the applicable correction route.
How to Claim an Eligible Income Tax Refund
The normal way to claim an eligible excess income-tax payment is to file the appropriate Income Tax Return and report the correct income, deductions and tax credits.
Complete the applicable verification requirements, ensure your eligible bank account is pre-validated and nominated for refund, and monitor the return's processing status through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.
A refund is not automatically issued merely because TDS or TCS was deducted or collected. The amount is determined after considering the applicable tax liability and processing of the filed return.
ध्यान दें: TDS या TCS कटने का मतलब यह नहीं कि पूरा पैसा refund होगा। आपकी final tax liability और eligible tax credits के आधार पर ही refund निर्धारित होता है।
Want to Check Your Income Tax Refund Status?
Use Easy Return's available refund-status checking feature to review your refund information. Official corrections, refund reissue requests and refund payments remain subject to Income Tax Department procedures.
Check Refund Status Free →Common Income Tax E-Filing Mistakes to Avoid
Even small errors in your Income Tax Return can result in processing delays, tax-credit discrepancies or additional notices.
Before submitting your ITR, review these common mistakes and the practical steps that can help you avoid them.
Selecting the Wrong ITR Form
Using ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 or ITR-4 without checking eligibility may create filing problems, especially when business income, capital gains or foreign assets are involved.
Choose the return form based on all your income sources, residential status and applicable filing-year requirements.
Not Reporting All Income Sources
Taxpayers sometimes report salary but overlook bank interest, freelance earnings, capital gains, rental income or income from another employer.
Review all relevant income statements, bank records and transactions. Cross-check AIS information, but do not rely only on pre-filled data.
TDS/TCS Credit Mismatch
The amount claimed in the return may differ from tax credits reported against the taxpayer's PAN. This can affect processing or the eligible refund amount.
Compare Form 26AS, AIS and supporting TDS/TCS certificates. Ask the deductor or collector to correct inaccurate reporting where necessary.
Claiming Ineligible Deductions
Claiming deductions without meeting their conditions or selecting the wrong tax regime may lead to an incorrect income-tax calculation.
Check the applicable regime, deduction limits, eligibility and supporting records before entering deduction amounts.
Incorrect Bank Account Information
An incorrect account number, outdated IFSC or missing bank pre-validation can interfere with an eligible refund credit.
Verify the bank details shown in your e-Filing profile. Ensure an eligible account is pre-validated and nominated for refund.
Missing ITR E-Verification
Uploading an ITR without completing the applicable verification process can leave the return unverified and may have filing consequences.
E-verify the submitted return within the prescribed period or complete the permitted ITR-V verification process. Ordinarily, the time limit is 30 days from submission.
Filing After the Applicable Due Date
Delayed filing may involve applicable late fees, restrictions on carrying forward certain losses or other statutory consequences.
Confirm the due date for your taxpayer category, relevant year and any officially notified extension. Prepare your records in advance.
Ignoring Notices or Filing Defects
Errors such as missing schedules or inconsistent financial information may result in a defective return notice or other departmental communication.
Monitor your official e-Filing account and registered contact details. Review any notice and respond within the applicable deadline using the prescribed process.
Quick Checklist Before Submitting Your ITR
- ✓ Select the correct ITR form and filing year.
- ✓ Report all applicable income sources accurately.
- ✓ Compare Form 26AS, AIS and TDS/TCS records.
- ✓ Verify tax regime and eligible deductions.
- ✓ Check PAN, contact and bank account details.
- ✓ Complete verification and save the acknowledgement.
What If You Discover a Mistake After Filing?
The appropriate correction depends on the type of error, return-processing status and the applicable deadlines. A revised return may be available for eligible corrections, while certain errors may require rectification or a response to a departmental notice.
Check the relevant options through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal before submitting a correction. Do not assume that every issue requires a new ITR.
ध्यान दें: ITR फाइल करने से पहले income, deductions, TDS/TCS और bank details अच्छी तरह जांचें। Return submit करने के बाद समय पर e-verification करना भी जरूरी है।
What Happens After Filing Your ITR?
Submitting your Income Tax Return is an important step, but the process does not necessarily end at submission.
You should complete the required verification, retain your acknowledgement, monitor the return's processing status and respond to any official communication where necessary.
Complete ITR E-Verification
Verify your return using an available prescribed method, such as Aadhaar OTP, eligible bank-account EVC, net banking or another permitted verification option.
Save Your ITR Acknowledgement
Retain the acknowledgement number and available ITR-V or submitted return documents. These can be useful for future reference, banking and tax records.
Check Your Filed ITR Status
Log in to the official portal and open e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns. Select the relevant return to review its current status and available details.
Income Tax Department Processing
The Department processes the return and may determine an eligible refund, tax demand, adjustment or other outcome. Any available processing intimation should be reviewed.
Monitor Refund or Tax Demand
If a refund is determined, check its official status and keep an eligible bank account validated. If a tax demand arises, review its basis and respond appropriately.
Review Notices and Pending Actions
Check official communications for any defective-return notice, clarification, adjustment or pending response. Follow the prescribed process within applicable deadlines.
Important: ITR Verification Deadline
Under the generally applicable e-Filing rules, a return must ordinarily be e-verified, or a duly signed ITR-V submitted through an accepted method, within 30 days of filing. Delayed or missing verification can have legal consequences. Check any applicable relief or updated official instructions.
Common ITR Status Messages Explained
Pending for Verification
The return has been submitted but the required verification has not been completed or recorded.
Successfully E-Verified
Verification is complete, but the return may still be awaiting processing. This does not itself mean that a refund is approved.
Processed
The Department has processed the return. Review the resulting intimation and any determined refund, demand or adjustment.
Defective or Action Required
The Department may have identified an issue requiring a response. Review the communication and act within the applicable deadline.

ध्यान दें: ITR फाइल होने के बाद उसका status समय-समय पर चेक करें। यदि कोई notice, tax demand या verification request आए, तो निर्धारित समय में जरूरी action लें।
Remember: Filing, verification, processing and refund credit are different stages. Processing time varies, and a filed or verified return does not guarantee a refund. Always rely on official status information for any required action.
Important ITR Filing Dates and Applicable Tax Year
Income Tax Return filing deadlines depend on the relevant tax year, taxpayer category, audit requirements and officially notified extensions.
From April 2026, India has transitioned to the Income-tax Act, 2025. However, returns relating to earlier financial years continue to follow the applicable provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27
Income earned from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 is reported under Assessment Year 2026–27.
This return is governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961, even though it is filed after 1 April 2026.
Select AY 2026–27 and the applicable old-Act ITR form on the e-Filing portal.
Tax Year 2026–27
Income earned from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 falls under Tax Year 2026–27 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
Its corresponding annual return will generally be filed in 2027, after the tax year ends.
Maintain separate records for income, deductions, TDS/TCS and tax payments relating to this tax year.
ITR Filing Due Dates for AY 2026–27
Salaried Individuals & Applicable Non-Audit Returns
Generally applicable to eligible non-audit taxpayers such as salaried individuals who do not fall under a separately prescribed later filing category.
Eligible Non-Audit Business Cases & Trusts
The due date for specified non-audit business cases and trusts was extended under the amended statutory framework for AY 2026–27.
Specified Tax Audit Cases
CBDT Circular No. 07/2026 extended the ITR filing due date from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026 for the specified taxpayer category covered by the circular.
Applicable Transfer-Pricing Cases
Generally applicable where the taxpayer is required to furnish a report under Section 92E. The September 2026 audit-case extension does not automatically change this category's due date.
Important: Not Every ITR Deadline Was Extended
The CBDT extension announced on 28 September 2026 specifically covers the persons identified in the relevant audit-case category. It also moved the corresponding tax audit report deadline from 30 September to 21 October 2026.
Always check whether your return falls under the specified category. A deadline extension for one group of taxpayers should not be applied automatically to all ITR filers.
For official updates and applicable extensions, refer to the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal .
What If You Miss the Original ITR Due Date?
Belated Income Tax Return
For AY 2026–27, an eligible belated return may generally be filed up to 31 December 2026, or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier.
Applicable late filing fees under Section 234F, interest and other consequences may apply. Certain loss carry-forward benefits can also be affected.
Revised Income Tax Return
If an eligible filed return contains an omission or error, the taxpayer may use the applicable revised-return procedure.
