ITR-V stands for Income Tax Return–Verification. It is the acknowledgement generated after you file an income tax return online and choose to verify it later.

If your ITR has already been successfully verified through Aadhaar OTP, EVC, net banking or another approved digital method, you normally do not need to send a physical ITR-V. If it remains unverified, download the ITR-V, sign it and follow the current Income Tax Department instructions within the applicable verification deadline.

For all available online methods, see Easy Return’s guide to e-verifying your income tax return.

What Is ITR-V?

The ITR-V form is an acknowledgement generated by the Income Tax e-Filing portal after an ITR is submitted. It confirms important filing details, such as your PAN, assessment year, acknowledgement number and date of filing.

The ITR V means Income Tax Return–Verification. It is not your complete ITR, tax computation or refund approval. It is only the verification acknowledgement connected with your filed return.

An ITR must be verified for the filing process to be completed. If it is not verified within the permitted period, the return may not be processed normally.

When Is ITR-V Generated?

An ITR-V may be generated when:

  • You file an ITR without a Digital Signature Certificate.
  • You choose to verify the return later.
  • You have not completed Aadhaar OTP, EVC or net-banking verification.
  • You need a copy of the filing acknowledgement for your records.

If the status shows “Successfully e-Verified,” you generally do not need to send a physical ITR-V.

ITR-V Password: How to Open the PDF

The downloaded ITR-V PDF is usually password-protected for privacy.

The commonly used password format is:

PAN in lowercase + date of birth in DDMMYYYY format

Example:

  • PAN: ABCDE1234F
  • Date of birth: 15 August 1992
  • Password: `abcde1234f15081992`

For non-individual taxpayers, use the applicable date of incorporation, formation or registration where required.

If the PDF does not open:

  • Confirm that the PAN is entered in lowercase.
  • Enter the date without spaces, slashes or hyphens.
  • Check that the date matches the information in the filed return.
  • Download a fresh ITR-V PDF from the official portal.
  • Avoid editing the PDF or using an unofficial password tool.

What Information Is Available in ITR-V?

An ITR-V acknowledgement generally includes:

  • Taxpayer name
  • PAN
  • Assessment year
  • ITR form type
  • Filing section
  • Acknowledgement number
  • Date and time of filing
  • Gross total income
  • Total deductions
  • Tax payable or refund details
  • Verification status
  • Space for signature, where physical verification is applicable

The format can differ based on the assessment year and return type.

Do You Need to Send ITR-V After E-Verification?

No. You ordinarily do not need to send a signed physical ITR-V if your return has already been successfully verified electronically.

Before deciding to post the ITR-V, check your return status on the e-Filing portal. If the status is “Successfully e-Verified,” retain the confirmation and acknowledgement for your records.

Electronic verification methods may include:

  • Aadhaar OTP
  • Electronic Verification Code or EVC
  • Net banking
  • Demat account
  • Bank account
  • Digital Signature Certificate, where applicable

How to Send Physical ITR-V to CPC

If electronic verification is not completed and physical submission is permitted, follow these steps:

01

Download the ITR-V PDF from the official e-Filing portal.

02

Print the document clearly.

03

Sign the printed ITR-V in the designated area using blue ink.

04

Do not write any additional information on the form.

05

Do not attach tax proofs, bank statements, Form 16 or other documents unless specifically requested.

06

Place the signed ITR-V in an envelope.

07

Send it using the postal method permitted by the Income Tax Department.

08

Keep the dispatch receipt and tracking number.

Use the CPC address printed in the latest ITR-V or published by the Income Tax Department. For exact postal details, read our guide to Send ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru. Postal instructions and addresses can change, so do not rely on an old address copied from another assessment year.

ITR-V Verification Time Limit

For returns transmitted electronically on or after 1 August 2022, the general verification time limit was reduced from 120 days to 30 days from the date of filing.

This 30-day period is important. A return that remains unverified may not be processed as a valid return. If you miss the deadline, check whether a condonation request or another remedy is available for your case.

The Income Tax Department’s e-verification guidance should be checked before acting because portal rules and procedures can change.

How to Check ITR-V Status

To check ITR V status:

01

Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

02

Go to “View Filed Returns.”

03

Select the relevant assessment year.

04

Review the return status and verification status.

You may see statuses such as:

  • Pending for e-Verification
  • Successfully e-Verified
  • ITR-V received
  • Under processing
  • Processed
  • Defective
  • Verification overdue

“Successfully e-Verified” does not necessarily mean that the return has been processed. Processing, intimation and refund are separate stages.

What Happens If ITR-V Is Not Submitted on Time?

If the ITR is not electronically verified or the signed ITR-V is not received within the permitted period, the return may be treated as unverified.

Possible consequences include:

  • Delay in processing the ITR
  • Delay in refund processing
  • Effect on the effective filing date
  • Need to submit a condonation request
  • Possible late-filing implications, depending on the case

If your deadline is close, digital verification is often faster than physical submission.

Download the ITR-V from the official portal, use the correct ITR-V password to open the PDF and check the verification status promptly. If electronic verification is complete, retain your acknowledgement and you will usually not need to send a physical copy to CPC.
