E-Verify Your ITR Through Net Banking — A Simple Online Method

Filed your Income Tax Return but haven't verified it yet? Your ITR may still be showing Pending for e-Verification. Filing and verifying a return are two separate steps. Without valid verification, your return may be treated as invalid under the applicable rules.

Net Banking is one of the recognised methods to e-verify an ITR online. It allows eligible taxpayers to authenticate through a supported bank's secure Net Banking service and complete verification on the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

To use this method, your PAN must be linked with your bank account, and Net Banking must be enabled. Your bank must also support the required e-Filing verification facility.

The process typically starts on the official e-Filing portal. You select Through Net Banking, choose an eligible bank, sign in through its secure banking website and follow the bank's link back to the Income Tax e-Filing portal. You then complete the remaining e-Verify step for the relevant ITR.

Once the portal confirms Successfully e-Verified, save the transaction ID for your records. Successful electronic verification does not require posting a physical ITR-V for the same return.

This guide explains eligibility, the official verification process, bank-linked methods, common requirements and the verification deadline.

Important: Net Banking verification does not require an Aadhaar OTP. However, the banking login may involve your bank's own authentication method, and applicable PAN–Aadhaar compliance remains separate.

Quick Definitions: Net Banking ITR E-Verification

Before starting, understand these four important terms used during ITR e-verification through Net Banking.

Net Banking E-Verification

A recognised ITR verification method that uses an eligible bank's Net Banking service. The taxpayer authenticates through the bank and returns to the Income Tax e-Filing portal to complete verification.

Electronic Verification Code (EVC)

An Electronic Verification Code is a code used to authenticate eligible tax-related actions. It may be generated through permitted bank, demat, ATM or other supported verification routes.

Pre-Validated Bank Account

A bank account whose details have been validated through the Income Tax e-Filing portal. Pre-validation and EVC enablement are especially relevant when using the Bank Account EVC method.

Supported Net Banking Bank

A bank that provides the required Income Tax e-Filing or e-verification access through its Net Banking service. Not every bank or banking login necessarily supports the same verification facility.

Net Banking vs Bank Account EVC: These are related but different verification methods. Through Net Banking uses bank authentication and a secure redirect to the e-Filing portal. Through Bank Account generates an EVC through an eligible pre-validated, EVC-enabled bank account. Select the method supported by your bank and shown on the official portal.

Official reference: Income Tax Department — How to e-Verify User Manual .

Can You E-Verify ITR Through Net Banking?

Yes. You can e-verify your Income Tax Return through Net Banking if your bank supports the Income Tax Department's e-Filing verification service and you meet the applicable authentication requirements.

This method lets eligible taxpayers sign in through a supported bank's secure Net Banking portal and complete verification on the official Income Tax e-Filing website.

Unlike Aadhaar OTP verification, this method does not require an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. However, your bank may require its own OTP or other login authentication.

PAN Linked With Bank Account

Your PAN should be correctly linked to the bank account being used for Net Banking verification.

Active Net Banking

Net Banking must be enabled for the account, and you should have valid credentials to sign in securely.

Supported Bank

The selected bank must appear among the banks supporting the relevant e-Filing Net Banking verification facility.

Working Authentication Details

Keep access to any mobile number, email address or security method required by your bank and the e-Filing portal.

Filed ITR Pending Verification

Your relevant return must have been filed and still require valid verification.

Applicable Verification Deadline

Complete verification within the prescribed period whenever possible. Late verification may involve additional consequences or relief procedures.

Quick Tip: The available banks and verification services may change. Before starting, visit the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and check the banks shown under Through Net Banking. If your bank is unavailable, another authorised verification method may be suitable.

Prerequisites at a Glance

  • PAN linked to bank account
  • Active Net Banking credentials
  • Filed ITR acknowledgement number
  • Correct assessment year
  • Access to required mobile/email authentication
  • Bank supported by the e-Filing service
Important: A pre-validated, EVC-enabled bank account is specifically relevant to the Bank Account EVC method. It should not be confused with the direct Through Net Banking verification route. The two methods have different requirements.

How to E-Verify ITR Through Net Banking: Official Step-by-Step Guide

Once your PAN-bank linkage, Net Banking access and supported-bank eligibility are confirmed, follow the process below. These steps follow the Income Tax Department's e-Verify User Manual, Section 3.7.

  1. Open the e-Filing Portal

Visit incometax.gov.in and access the e-Verify Return service. You can begin through the relevant pre-login or post-login facility.

  2. Identify Your Pending Return

Locate the filed ITR that requires verification. If using the pre-login route, enter the PAN, assessment year, acknowledgement number and other requested details.

  3. Select Through Net Banking

On the e-Verify page, select Through Net Banking and click Continue.

  4. Choose Your Bank

Select a supported bank from the available list. Click Continue to proceed.

  5. Read the Disclaimer

Review the information shown by the portal regarding the secure bank redirect. Click Continue when ready.

  6. Log In to Net Banking

You will be redirected to your bank's Net Banking login page. Authenticate using your bank credentials and any additional security checks required.

  7. Return to the e-Filing Portal

Inside Net Banking, find the bank's Income Tax e-Filing login option. Select it to return to the e-Filing portal. The bank's Net Banking session is normally ended during this process.

  8. Locate the Relevant ITR

After returning, access the relevant ITR or pending verification service from the e-Filing dashboard. Check the assessment year and return details.

  9. Click e-Verify

Select e-Verify for the correct return. This completes the direct Net Banking verification route when accepted successfully. A separate Bank Account EVC is not required for this direct flow.

  10. Save the Transaction ID

The portal should display a successful verification message with a Transaction ID. Save the confirmation and check your registered email for the official message.

Confirmation: Successfully e-Verified

After the official portal confirms successful verification, your ITR has completed the taxpayer-verification stage. Keep the Transaction ID and verification confirmation. No physical ITR-V is required for the same return after successful electronic verification.

Important: Signing in to your bank is not the final verification step. After the secure redirect, you must return to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and complete e-Verify for the relevant ITR. Do not assume that your return has been verified until the official success confirmation is shown.
Security Reminder: Always confirm the bank's genuine website before entering Net Banking credentials. Never share your bank password, OTP, transaction PIN or e-Filing password with anyone claiming to verify the ITR on your behalf.

Three Bank-Linked ITR Verification Methods: Don't Mix Them Up

When you want to e-verify an ITR using banking services, the Income Tax Department provides different verification options. They may involve a secure Net Banking login, generating an Electronic Verification Code (EVC), or entering a code already generated. These options are related, but they are not identical.

01

Direct Net Banking

Select Through Net Banking on the official e-Filing portal. Choose a supported bank and authenticate through its Net Banking login.

Use the bank's e-Filing link to return to the Income Tax portal, locate the ITR and complete e-Verify.

Code required? No separate EVC entry is required for this direct verification route. Your bank may still request OTP or another login authentication method.
02

EVC Through Bank Account

Select Through Bank Account to generate an EVC using an eligible bank account registered with the e-Filing portal.

The account must be pre-validated and EVC-enabled. The generated code is delivered through the contact details verified by the bank.

Code required? Yes. Enter the generated EVC within the official verification process.
03

Existing EVC

If you already have a valid Electronic Verification Code, select I already have an EVC on the e-Verify page.

For example, eligible taxpayers may generate an EVC through a supported bank ATM and use that code on the e-Filing portal.

Code required? Yes. Enter the existing, valid, unused EVC. A code that has expired or has already been used will not work.

✓ Safety Do's

  • Enter EVC only through the genuine Income Tax e-Filing verification process.
  • Confirm the official incometax.gov.in domain.
  • Verify the bank's genuine website before signing in.
  • Save the successful e-verification Transaction ID.

✕ Safety Don'ts

  • Never share Net Banking passwords, OTPs or EVC with callers or agents.
  • Avoid public or shared computers for banking and tax logins.
  • Do not follow unknown banking links from messages or emails.
  • Do not assume bank login alone completes ITR verification.

How to Generate EVC Through a Bank Account

The Bank Account EVC method differs from direct Net Banking verification. You generate an EVC through an eligible validated bank account rather than completing verification through the bank's Net Banking redirect.

  1. Open the e-Filing Portal

Log in to incometax.gov.in with your registered credentials.

  2. Add Your Bank Account

Navigate to My Profile → My Bank Account. Add your account if it is not already registered.

  3. Complete Bank Pre-Validation

Submit the required bank account details and complete any authentication requested by the portal. Check the validation status before proceeding.

  4. Enable EVC

After successful validation, enable EVC for the eligible account. This option depends on the bank's integration and the taxpayer's eligibility.

  5. Select Through Bank Account

Open the relevant e-Verify page and select Through Bank Account. Follow the instructions to generate an EVC.

  6. Enter EVC and Verify

Enter the EVC received through your bank-verified contact details. Validate the code and save the official verification confirmation and Transaction ID.

How Long Does Bank Pre-Validation Take? It is not guaranteed to complete within 24 hours. The Income Tax Department's My Bank Account guidance mentions that validation status can take up to 10–12 working days. Check the actual account status in your e-Filing profile. If your ITR verification deadline is approaching, consider another eligible verification method.
Important Difference: A validated bank account is not necessarily EVC-enabled. If the EVC option is unavailable, confirm your bank's eligibility, account validation status and matching contact details. You can consult the official Generate EVC User Manual .

How to E-Verify ITR Through ICICI Bank and Other Supported Banks

The Income Tax Department provides a broadly similar direct Net Banking verification flow for supported banks. However, individual banks may use different menu names, authentication steps or redirect screens.

E-Verify ITR Through ICICI Bank

If ICICI Bank is available under Through Net Banking on the official e-Verify page, select the bank and continue.

Review the redirect disclaimer, open the genuine ICICI Net Banking login page and complete bank authentication.

Find the Income Tax e-Filing access option within the banking portal and follow the secure link back to the Income Tax website.

On the e-Filing dashboard, locate your filed ITR, select e-Verify and save the successful verification Transaction ID.

E-Verify ITR Through Other Eligible Banks

Banks such as HDFC, SBI, Axis and Kotak provide various tax and e-Filing-related services. Confirm the specific Net Banking verification option is currently available before starting.

The general steps are: select Through Net Banking, choose the supported bank, review the disclaimer and complete bank login.

Then follow the bank's e-Filing link, return to the Income Tax portal and select e-Verify for the correct return.

Successful verification should produce an official confirmation with a Transaction ID.

Supported Bank Availability: Do not assume a bank supports the direct Net Banking route merely because it provides an EVC or other tax service. Open the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and check the banks currently displayed for your chosen verification method.

E-Verification Through Net Banking vs Aadhaar OTP

Both Net Banking and Aadhaar OTP are recognised methods of electronic ITR verification for eligible taxpayers. The best method depends on your bank access, PAN–Aadhaar linkage and available authentication options.

Basis Net Banking Aadhaar OTP
Main Requirement Supported bank, PAN linked with the bank account, and active Net Banking access. PAN–Aadhaar linkage and access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
Authentication Sign in through the bank's secure login and complete the e-Filing verification flow. Enter the OTP received on the Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
Login Required? Bank login is required. The direct Net Banking option is available through the post-login e-Filing process. Available through eligible pre-login or post-login e-verification processes.
Best Suited For Taxpayers with an active login at a bank supporting the direct e-Filing route. Taxpayers with working PAN–Aadhaar linkage and Aadhaar mobile access.
Common Problem Unsupported bank, PAN-bank mismatch, login failure or redirect issue. SMS delay, inactive Aadhaar-registered mobile or unsuccessful OTP validation.
Verification Type Direct secure bank authentication and redirect. Bank Account EVC is a separate verification method. Aadhaar-based one-time password authentication.
Physical ITR-V Needed? No, after successful electronic verification. No, after successful electronic verification.
Which Method Should You Choose? Use Net Banking if your bank supports the direct e-Filing route. Use Aadhaar OTP if your PAN and Aadhaar are linked and you can receive the OTP. Both methods complete the verification stage, but neither guarantees faster ITR processing or refund approval.

Common Net Banking ITR E-Verification Problems

If you cannot e-verify your ITR through Net Banking, check the actual problem before repeating the process. Here are common issues and practical solutions.

Bank Not Showing in the List

Not every bank supports the direct Net Banking e-verification route.

Solution: Check the current supported banks on the official portal. If your bank is unavailable, choose another eligible verification method.

PAN Not Linked With Bank Account

The PAN registered with your bank may be missing or different from your e-Filing PAN.

Solution: Review the PAN details in your bank records. Contact your bank or use its official account-update process.

Redirect Fails After Bank Login

The e-Filing portal may not open because the banking session expired or a browser setting blocked the redirect.

Solution: Start a fresh session from the official e-Filing portal. Check browser cookies, redirects and pop-up settings only as needed. Never disable security protections unnecessarily.

Bank Account EVC Not Received

This applies when you selected the separate Bank Account EVC method, not direct Net Banking.

Solution: Check whether the account is pre-validated and EVC-enabled. Verify bank-linked contact details and request a new EVC where permitted.

Return Still Shows Pending

You may have completed bank authentication without selecting the final e-Verify action.

Solution: Check the filed return's status and confirm whether a verification Transaction ID was generated. Complete e-Verify if pending and still permitted.

Bank Login or Authentication Error

Incorrect credentials, bank OTP problems or a temporarily unavailable banking service can interrupt verification.

Solution: Use the bank's official login or recovery service. If time is limited, consider another authorised verification method.
Security Reminder: Never share Net Banking passwords, bank OTPs, transaction PINs or EVCs. Confirm the genuine banking website before entering your credentials.

Missed the 30-Day ITR E-Verification Deadline?

For electronically filed returns submitted on or after 1 August 2022, the general verification period is 30 days from filing. Completing verification within this period helps preserve the original filing date and avoid applicable late-filing consequences.

30 DAYS FROM FILING

Complete Verification Before the Deadline

If verification is completed within the prescribed period, the original return-upload date is generally recognised as the filing date. If verification takes place after 30 days, the verification date may be treated as the filing date, with applicable late-filing consequences.

What If You Miss the Deadline? An uploaded return that remains unverified can be treated as invalid. However, delayed verification does not automatically mean every return is permanently beyond correction. The official portal provides a condonation process for eligible genuine delays. Approval is not guaranteed.

How to Request Condonation of Delay

  1. Log In to e-Filing

Visit incometax.gov.in and sign in to your registered account.

  2. Open Condonation Request

Navigate to Services → Condonation Request.

  3. Select the Relevant Request

Choose Delay in submission of ITR-V as applicable, and follow the portal's displayed instructions.

  4. Choose Your Filed Return

Select the return that requires delayed verification.

  5. Provide the Reason

Select the genuine reason for delay and provide remarks where requested.

  6. Submit and Track

Submit the request and save the Transaction ID. Check for the relevant official decision and complete any further verification requirements.

Important: Submitting a condonation request does not by itself mean the late verification has been accepted. The applicable authority considers the request. Any late-filing fees, interest or other consequences depend on the particular return and applicable law. For current instructions, refer to the Income Tax Department's Service Request User Manual .

Frequently Asked Questions About ITR E-Verification Through Net Banking

Find answers to common questions about Net Banking ITR e-verification, supported banks, ICICI Bank, the 30-day verification deadline, and physical ITR-V requirements.

Can I e-verify ITR through Net Banking?

Yes. Eligible taxpayers can e-verify their Income Tax Return through Net Banking when the selected bank supports the official Income Tax e-Filing verification service.

Your PAN must be linked to your bank account, Net Banking should be active, and the filed ITR should still require verification.

Authenticate through the bank, return to the official e-Filing portal, select e-Verify for the correct return, and save the Transaction ID.

Which banks allow ITR e-verification through Net Banking?

Only banks currently supporting the Income Tax Department's Through Net Banking verification option can be used for this method.

To check the available banks, visit the official Income Tax e-Filing portal , open the e-Verify service, select Through Net Banking, and review the bank list.

The supported-bank list can change, so verify availability before starting.

Can I e-verify ITR through ICICI Bank?

Yes, if ICICI Bank is currently available under the official Net Banking e-verification service for your return.

Select Through Net Banking, choose ICICI Bank, review the redirect disclaimer, and log in securely through Net Banking.

Follow the bank's Income Tax e-Filing link to return to the portal. Locate the relevant ITR and complete e-Verify. Save the successful verification confirmation and Transaction ID.

What is the deadline to verify an ITR?

For electronically filed returns submitted on or after 1 August 2022, the general verification window is 30 days from the filing date.

Verification after the prescribed period may change the recognised filing date and lead to applicable late-filing consequences.

If your return remains unverified beyond the deadline, review the applicable verification or condonation-of-delay procedure. Approval of a condonation request is not automatic.

Do I need to send physical ITR-V after e-verifying through Net Banking?

No. Once the Income Tax Department portal confirms that your ITR has been successfully e-verified through Net Banking, you do not need to send a physical ITR-V for the same return.

Save the verification confirmation and Transaction ID. You can also review the filed return's status on the e-Filing portal to confirm successful verification.

Important: Successful ITR e-verification confirms completion of the taxpayer-verification stage. It does not automatically mean the return has been processed or an income-tax refund has been approved. Always check the official return-processing status for subsequent updates.
