- EVC
- An Electronic Verification Code used to authenticate an eligible Income Tax Return or another supported submission.

What Is E-Verification of an Income Tax Return?
Filing and verifying an Income Tax Return are two separate steps.
Filing transmits your income, deduction and tax information to the Income Tax Department. Verification authenticates the submitted return and confirms that it belongs to you.
The e verification of income tax return can be completed using different methods, depending on the taxpayer’s available accounts, registered contact details and eligibility.
Common electronic options include:
- Aadhaar OTP
- Net banking
- Pre-validated bank account EVC
- Pre-validated demat account EVC
- Bank ATM EVC
- Digital Signature Certificate
A taxpayer may also complete physical verification by sending a duly signed ITR-V to the Centralised Processing Centre according to the applicable instructions.
You only need to use one valid verification method for a particular return.
Why Is ITR E-Verification Required?
Completing income tax return verification is important because it:
- Authenticates the filed return
- Confirms the taxpayer’s approval of the submission
- Completes the return-filing process
- Enables the return to proceed for processing
- Supports processing of an eligible refund claim
- Establishes a completed tax-filing record
- Helps prevent an unverified return from being treated as invalid
An unverified return may remain incomplete even when all the income and tax figures in it are correct.

Time Limit to E-Verify ITR

If verification is completed within the permitted period, the date on which the return was originally uploaded is generally treated as the date of filing.
If the return is verified after the 30-day period, the date of verification may be treated as the filing date, and applicable consequences of late filing can follow. An unverified return may be treated as invalid, although a condonation request can be submitted for a genuine delay. Income Tax Department: 30-day verification rules.
Example
Suppose you file your return on 15 July.
The 30-day verification period begins from the filing date. Complete verification within the applicable period to preserve the original filing date, subject to the current official rule.
