E-Verify Your ITR Through Aadhaar OTP — A Simple Way to Complete Verification
Filed your Income Tax Return and want a convenient way to verify it? Aadhaar OTP is one of the easiest online verification methods when you meet its requirements.
You can e-verify your ITR using Aadhaar OTP when your PAN is linked with Aadhaar and you have access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
On the official Income Tax e-Filing portal, select Aadhaar OTP as your verification method, agree to Aadhaar validation, generate the OTP and enter the six-digit code received on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
Once the portal confirms successful e-verification, save the transaction ID and confirmation for your records. When completed online, you do not need to print or post a physical ITR-V for that verification.

Aadhaar OTP ITR Verification at a Glance
Before starting, understand these four important terms used during ITR e-verification through Aadhaar OTP.
Aadhaar OTP
A six-digit One-Time Password sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. It is used to authenticate eligible verification actions. The OTP is normally valid for 15 minutes.
PAN–Aadhaar Linkage
Your PAN must be linked with Aadhaar to use Aadhaar OTP for ITR e-verification. This is a method-specific requirement, not a reason to assume every taxpayer can use Aadhaar OTP.
ITR E-Verification
The process of electronically confirming a filed Income Tax Return. Successful verification completes the required verification step and allows normal processing to proceed, subject to applicable rules.
Verification Status
Shows whether your ITR verification is still pending or has succeeded. Successfully e-Verified does not automatically mean the ITR has been processed or an income-tax refund has been approved.

Can You E-Verify ITR Through Aadhaar OTP?
Yes. Eligible taxpayers can e-verify an Income Tax Return through Aadhaar OTP using the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. It is a convenient online method that does not require printing, signing or posting a physical ITR-V once verification succeeds.
However, Aadhaar-based verification works only when the necessary identity and authentication requirements are satisfied. Check the following conditions before you begin.
PAN Linked With Aadhaar
The taxpayer's PAN and Aadhaar must be successfully linked for Aadhaar OTP verification.
Aadhaar-Registered Mobile Number
You must have access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar to receive the verification OTP.
ITR Filed and Awaiting Verification
Your relevant Income Tax Return must have been filed and still require verification.
Correct Identity Details
PAN and Aadhaar data must pass the applicable identity checks. Significant mismatches may prevent successful validation.
Official Verification Process
Use the Income Tax Department's official verification facility and complete all required consent and OTP steps.
Verification Within Applicable Time
Aim to complete verification within the general 30-day window. Late verification may require an additional process and can have filing-date consequences.
Check PAN–Aadhaar Link Status Before You Start
Before using Aadhaar OTP, confirm that your PAN is linked with Aadhaar. The Income Tax Department provides an official link-status checking facility that can be accessed without logging in.
Open the Official Portal
Visit incometax.gov.in and find the Link Aadhaar Status option under Quick Links.
Enter PAN and Aadhaar
Follow the status-checking screen and enter your PAN and Aadhaar number as requested. Select View Link Aadhaar Status.
Review the Link Status
The portal shows whether PAN–Aadhaar linking is successful or the request is still pending. Follow the official instructions if action is required.
How to E-Verify ITR Through Aadhaar OTP: Step-by-Step Guide

What Does “Successfully e-Verified” Mean?
When your ITR status shows Successfully e-Verified, it means the required taxpayer-verification step has been successfully completed.
This is an important milestone: your filed return has passed the verification stage. However, verification and processing are two different stages.
A successfully e-verified ITR is not necessarily a processed return. It also does not guarantee that a refund has been approved, issued or credited.
After verification, the Department processes the return under the applicable procedure and determines the tax result, including any refund, demand or no-demand/no-refund outcome.
What Happens Next?
1. Verification Completed
Save the transaction ID and successful verification confirmation. Keep the ITR acknowledgement number available.
2. Return Processing
The return proceeds through the applicable processing and tax-credit checks. Processing time can vary.
3. Processing Result
Review the processing result and intimation to understand whether a refund, demand or nil outcome was determined.
4. Refund Payment, If Due
If a refund is payable, its issue and bank credit are separate events. Keep your eligible bank account validated.

Aadhaar OTP Not Received for ITR Verification?
If your Aadhaar OTP is not received for ITR e-verification, identify the likely cause before requesting another code. Repeated OTP requests do not necessarily fix the problem.
Inactive Aadhaar-Linked Mobile
The mobile number registered with Aadhaar may be inactive, unavailable or unable to receive messages.
Action: Check access to that mobile number and update Aadhaar contact details through the authorised UIDAI process if necessary.
Delayed or Expired OTP
SMS delivery can be delayed, and the OTP may expire before you enter it.
Action: Wait briefly and request a fresh OTP when appropriate. Use the newest code.
PAN–Aadhaar Linkage Problem
An incomplete linkage or identity-record issue may prevent Aadhaar OTP verification.
Action: Check the official PAN–Aadhaar linkage status and follow the required correction procedure.
Portal or Network Issue
A temporary network failure, session timeout or portal issue can interrupt verification.
Action: Reopen the official portal, start a fresh session and try again.
Repeated OTP Requests
Too many requests or incorrect OTP attempts may prevent normal progress.
Action: Follow the portal's displayed attempt limit and instructions. Avoid repeatedly generating codes.
Wrong OTP or Unsafe Message
You may have entered an old code or received a suspicious message unrelated to your request.
Action: Enter only the code received through the legitimate verification flow. Never disclose it to anyone.
Can You E-Verify ITR Without Aadhaar OTP?
Yes. You may be able to e-verify your ITR without Aadhaar OTP using another permitted verification method.
This can help if you no longer have access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number or if Aadhaar-based authentication is unavailable.
The available alternative depends on your eligibility, account setup and the methods shown by the official e-Filing portal.
Bank Account EVC
Use an eligible, pre-validated and EVC-enabled bank account to generate an Electronic Verification Code.
Demat Account EVC
Use a suitable pre-validated, EVC-enabled demat account where the service is available.
Net Banking
Eligible banks provide a route to the income-tax e-Filing portal or applicable EVC services through net banking.
Bank ATM EVC
Certain supported banks provide EVC generation through eligible ATM/debit-card facilities.
Digital Signature Certificate
A valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) may be used where supported or required. Additional DSC setup can be necessary.
Physical ITR-V
Where permitted, a duly signed ITR-V may be sent to CPC in the prescribed manner within the applicable verification period.
Aadhaar OTP vs EVC for ITR Verification
Both Aadhaar OTP and Electronic Verification Code (EVC) are recognised electronic verification options for eligible taxpayers. Their main difference lies in how the verification code is generated and which account or mobile details you need.
| Basis | Aadhaar OTP | EVC |
|---|---|---|
| Main Requirement | PAN–Aadhaar linkage and access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number. | An eligible bank, demat, net-banking, ATM or other permitted EVC route. |
| Code Delivery | OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. | Code may be delivered through registered contact details depending on the generation method. |
| Best Suited For | Taxpayers who have working PAN–Aadhaar linkage and mobile access. | Eligible taxpayers who prefer another authorised electronic verification method. |
| Verification Route | Income Tax e-Filing portal, including supported pre-login and post-login flows. | Official e-Filing portal using the applicable EVC generation method. |
| Code Validity | Normally 15 minutes. | Generally 72 hours from generation, subject to the applicable facility. |
| Physical ITR-V Needed? | No, after successful electronic verification. | No, after successful electronic verification. |
| Verification Outcome | Completes ITR verification when accepted successfully. | Completes ITR verification when accepted successfully. |
ITR E-Verification Deadline: How Many Days Do You Have?
After filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), you must complete the required verification within the applicable time limit. For electronically filed returns submitted on or after 1 August 2022, the general verification window is 30 days from filing.
If you use Aadhaar OTP, complete the verification before this period ends. Do not leave it until the last day because OTP delivery, PAN–Aadhaar linkage, identity verification or temporary portal issues can interrupt the process.
Complete Verification Within the Prescribed Period
When verification is completed within the applicable period, the original return-upload date is generally retained as the recognised filing date. If verification is delayed beyond 30 days, late-filing consequences may apply and condonation of delay may become relevant.
Common Aadhaar OTP Verification Errors and Solutions
If your ITR Aadhaar OTP verification fails, read the error displayed on the official e-Filing portal before trying again. Here are common problems and practical next steps.
PAN and Aadhaar Are Not Linked
The Aadhaar OTP method may be unavailable if the taxpayer's PAN is not successfully linked with Aadhaar.
Aadhaar OTP Has Expired
The OTP has a limited validity period. An expired code cannot be used to complete verification.
Wrong OTP Entered
An incorrect OTP may result from a typing mistake or using an older code.
ITR Is Already Verified
The selected return may already have successfully completed verification.
Still Shows Pending After OTP Submission
A pending status after OTP submission does not by itself prove the verification succeeded or failed.

E-Verify Your ITR Now →Frequently Asked Questions About Aadhaar OTP ITR E-Verification
Find answers to common questions about e-verifying ITR through Aadhaar OTP, PAN–Aadhaar linking, mobile OTP problems, alternative verification methods and verification deadlines.
01 Can I e-verify ITR through Aadhaar OTP?
Yes. If your PAN is linked with Aadhaar and you have access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number, you can generally e-verify an eligible filed ITR using Aadhaar OTP.
Select Aadhaar OTP on the official Income Tax e-Filing portal, complete the required consent, enter the received OTP and submit it within its validity period.
02 Is PAN–Aadhaar linking required for ITR verification through Aadhaar OTP?
Yes. Successful PAN–Aadhaar linkage is a prerequisite for using the Aadhaar OTP verification method.
If PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, Aadhaar OTP authentication may be unavailable. Check the linking status through the official e-Filing portal and complete the applicable process first.
03 How do I e-verify ITR using Aadhaar OTP?
Log in to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. Open e-File → Income Tax Returns → e-Verify Return .
Select the relevant unverified return and choose Aadhaar OTP. Confirm the Aadhaar consent declaration, generate the OTP, enter the six-digit code received on your Aadhaar-registered mobile and select Validate.
Save the successful verification confirmation and Transaction ID.
04 What should I do if Aadhaar OTP is not received?
First, confirm that the mobile number registered with Aadhaar is active and accessible. Wait briefly if SMS delivery is delayed.
If necessary, start a fresh session through the official portal and request another OTP. Avoid unnecessary repeated requests or incorrect attempts.
If your verification deadline is approaching, use another eligible verification method. Never share your OTP with another person.
05 Can I e-verify ITR without Aadhaar?
Yes. Eligible taxpayers may use alternative verification methods, including EVC generated through a suitable bank account, demat account, net banking or supported bank ATM.
A Digital Signature Certificate may be available or required in relevant circumstances. Physical ITR-V submission is another permitted verification route where applicable, although it is not electronic verification.
06 What does successfully e-verified ITR mean?
Successfully e-Verified means the filed return has completed the required taxpayer verification stage.
It does not automatically mean the ITR has been processed, nor does it guarantee that an income-tax refund has been approved or credited.
Save the Transaction ID and check the filed-return status for further processing updates.
07 Do I need to send ITR-V after Aadhaar OTP verification?
No. When the official portal confirms successful ITR e-verification through Aadhaar OTP, a physical ITR-V is not required for the same return.
Keep the verification confirmation and Transaction ID as proof. You can also review the verification status through the e-Filing portal.
08 Can I use Aadhaar OTP to verify an old ITR?
Possibly. If an earlier filed ITR remains pending verification, check whether the official e-Filing portal allows verification for that return.
Where the prescribed verification deadline has expired, the portal may require a condonation-of-delay request. Approval is subject to the applicable rules and the competent authority.
An old unverified return is not automatically eligible for verification without additional procedure.
09 How long do I have to verify my ITR?
For electronically filed returns submitted on or after 1 August 2022, the general verification period is 30 days from filing.
Verification after the prescribed period may affect the recognised filing date and trigger applicable late-filing consequences. If the return remains unverified, it may be treated as invalid, subject to applicable condonation provisions.
10 Is Aadhaar OTP verification the same as EVC verification?
No. Aadhaar OTP verification uses an OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar and requires PAN–Aadhaar linkage.
Electronic Verification Code (EVC) uses an eligible verification route such as a pre-validated, EVC-enabled bank account, demat account or supported net-banking facility.
Both can complete electronic ITR verification when the selected method is available and successfully authenticated.
